Liberal Arts in the Age of Austerity: A Conversation with Robert Meister
March 5, 2024
4:30 – 6:00 Scheuer, Kohlberg Hall

Please join us for a conversation with Robert Meister, Professor of Social and Political thought in the History of Consciousness at UC-Santa Cruz. Meister is the author of After Evil: A Politics of Human Rights and, most recently, Justice is an Option: A Democratic Theory of Finance for the Twenty-First Century. Together we will ask: how are austerity and financialization shaping liberal arts education? How are these phenomena experienced and challenged in small liberal arts colleges? This public conversation hopes to enrich ongoing discussions about labor, capitalism, and political struggle at U.S. universities today.

Robert Meister is professor of social and political thought in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he directs the Bruce Initiative on Rethinking Capitalism. His most recent book is titled, Justice is an Option: A Democratic Theory of Finance for the Twenty-First Century (2021)

Organized by Alejandra Azuero-Quijano, Andy Hines, Sangina Patnaik, and Dennis Hogan.
Sponsored by the Tri-Co Mellon Seed Grant and the Aydelotte Foundation at Swarthmore College.
