Swarthmore College

This series – the Critical Health Colloquium – features faculty who are working on topics related to the political economy or other critical studies of health and medicine. The goal of these sessions is to create opportunities for faculty and staff to gain feedback and to build an interdisciplinary community at Swarthmore around a liberal arts approach to questions of health and medicine.

“The Morbipolitics of Caribbean Quarantines” is the third chapter of Dr. Elise A. Mitchell’s book manuscript, Morbid Geographies: Enslavement, Epidemics, and Embodiment in the Early Modern Atlantic World (under contract with Penn Press). This chapter develops the concept of “morbipolitics” as it weaves together the stories of countless enslaved African arrivals who found themselves sick with smallpox and subject to circum-Caribbean quarantine policies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Open to faculty and staff from Swarthmore and our greater Tri-Co community.
