Swarthmore College

Do you want to think about how the pandemic, demands for racial justice, labor market struggles, and the changing climate have recast our understanding of what the liberal arts is and what it has been? Are you interested in doing research on what colleges might and ought to become in the future?

The Aydelotte Foundation is seeking student research fellows for the next academic year, 2022-2023. Research Fellows work closely with the co-directors and associate director of the Aydelotte Foundation to support our research on liberal arts and higher education. Research Fellows have the opportunity to engage and support our current projects, including our newest initiative on “Race, Racism, and Liberal Arts,” as well as to develop new projects that stem from our existing interests.

As a fellow, you will gain experience in working for a research-based organization, writing and editing publications for a regular publication platform, and developing a thorough understanding of how the liberal arts functions at Swarthmore and institutions like it, as well as higher education institutions radically different from Swarthmore. Current fellows are working on projects that include developing guides to make higher education data easier to use and access; exploring the convergence of surveillance and ed-tech; classifying how different types of higher education make marketing claims on what they provide; and building resources for further study and research that align with the conversations in our “Race, Racism, and Liberal Arts” project.

Research Fellows should be able to provide evidence of creativity, working to deadlines, independent thinking, and well-developed research skills in one or more disciplines. Facility with social media platforms, web development, and/or general programming skills is welcome but not required. Research Fellows should be students in their third or fourth year of study at Swarthmore College.

Interested students can apply now through JobX. If you have any questions, please contact Candy Roeder (croeder1@swarthmore.edu), the Administrative Assistant for the Aydelotte Foundation.
